Tween & Teen Non-Toxic Makeup Guide
(also pregnancy safe too!)
Makeup is having a moment with a younger audience. I mean, you can argue teen girls have always been “into” make up but perhaps not on the level that they are today. Social Media is FILLED with young girls teaching other younger girls all about personal care routines, Sephora is many a teen and preteen girls favorite place, and it’s safe to say that some teen and tween girls have a more robust evening routine than many an adult!
What is appropriate and how much is up to each family (I have teen and tween boys and a preschool girl so am not here now personally) but what IS important is for the products they’re using are safe and, unfortunately, often times this is not the case. It is still legal for makeup to contain harmful endocrine disruptors, carcinogens, heavy metals, pfas and allergens. In the US 11 chemicals are banned from personal care products, while in the EU the number is over 2500. That’s a serious issue for everyone but, particularly for children and teens, who are in critical stages of hormonal and overall development ( which means that they are particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of these chemicals) ..... but there are great products to be found . Bonus? Mom’s can use these products too!

Green Nail Polish ( the glitter one is called “ Mermaid” ) at detox market
Leahlani Oil perfume: essential oil based and subtly smelling- age appropriate for those who really want a perfume (conventional perfumes can have dozens of undisclosed chemicals under the word “ fragrance or perfume” including endocrine disruptors and allergens)
Ilia soft pink lip gloss ( color: porcelain): This has some pigments that I don’t love but, compared to conventional lip glosses, this is still a Cleaner brand. For tweens, I might opt for something even more natural like those listed below though....
100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Rose Gold Palette: I love that these are all naturally derived pigments and they test for heavy metals

100% Pure lipgloss: Few and good ingredients. Another totally safe option.
