Most Smartwatches have very high levels of PFAS
There is a high possibility that it could be exposing you to PFAS chemicals
A new study, by researchers at the University of Notre Dame, found VERY high levels of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances—otherwise known as PFAS, harmful chemicals that can be absorbed through the skin—present in 15 popular brands of smartwatch bands out of 22 checked.
How high were the levels?
Much higher than most PFAS seen in consumer products- some watches had PFAS levels as high as those found in firefighting equipment
The rate at which PFAS are absorbed into the body through the skin is unknown, although research has found that this does occur. Previous studies have found sweat may increase the rate at which PFAS are absorbed.
Additionally, sincr bands are pressed against wrists for a prolonged period, researchers called the study’s findings “concerning.”
The chemicals are likely used for their water resistant and stains resistant properties.
PFAS chemicals are called “forever chemicals” because they do not naturally break down and can accumulate in the environment and the human body. Exposure to PFAS has been linked to various serious health issues, including cancer, kidney disease, liver problems, immune disorders, and congenital disabilities.
So: Which sports watches contain PFAS?
Nike, Apple, Fitbit, and Google were among the 22 tested. While Researchers did not discose which ones do contain PFAS- they did say that some brands do advise the use of PFAS— and that Those that include PFAS were as much as $50 more than those that did not ( yup : you are paying more for PFAS)
How to avoid?
Check for the term “fluoroelastomer band,” which indicates their use in the product…. This is a type of synthetic rubber
Specifically for Apple: avoid their sports band (back in 2021 I reported it was known to contain PFAS)
NEW: A lawsuit filed yesterday ( 1/21) in the Northern District of California, specifically targets three Apple Watch bands:
The Sport Band that comes stock with new basic model Apple Watches,
the Ocean Band
The Nike Sport Band that ships with Nike-branded Apple Watches.
Apple describes all three as being made from fluoroelastomer, which the lawsuit alleges conceals the presence of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS.
Better options?
watches with silicone bands are a safer alternative.
Additional concerns
please keep in mind that smart watches will admit high levels of EMF constantly throughout the day.

Ok thank you!
Hi- do you have recommendations for companies that make safe bands for tweens? Thank you!
